For corporations to maintain profitability in today’s marketplace, they
must maintain the reliability,
security, and safety of their telecommunications network. In order to
achieve the required degree of hardness from lightning in
telecommunications networks, the two most critical requirements which
must be established and maintained are communication isolation and power
supply surge suppression. They can be most efficiently and
economically provided using:
(1) fiber communications isolation from a remote ground using Fujitsu’s FLASHWAVE and (2) AC power line surge protection using Northern
Technologies’ V3 Shield Technology.
COMMUNICATIONS ISOLATION FROM A REMOTE GROUND
FLASHWAVE fiber solution from Fujitsu Network Communications is
a very simple solution for an exposed telecommunications network. A
solution that provides an OC-3 SONET platform to the very edge of the
network and connect down to DS1 or DS3.
Fujitsu has a total SONET fiber network solution both backbone and
end units using its new Flashwave 4010 remote extension platform. This
end platform is a compact OC-3 access device that is optimized for
simplicity and low cost to enable optical delivery of DS1 or DS3
services. This platform provides a advance feature set to reduce the
complexity of installation and turning up of new services. It is barely
larger than a cigar box at half the weight, and is under $7K!
In addition, a Fujitsu fiber entrance facility system is being
developed that will offer a turnkey fiber system at DS0. This system
will support either fiber directly from the Central Office (CO) or
copper initially to the 300V-Point from the CO and fiber from the
300V-Point to the substation. Later, the copper interface at the
300V-Point may be removed and fiber brought all the way into the
substation, when the telephone company is able to offer fiber
connectivity directly from the CO. This ‘fiber entrance facility’
system, providing a copper to fiber interface, will be ready in the
fourth quarter.
AC POWER LINE SURGE PROTECTION
AC Power line surge protection using Northern Technologies’ DMK
Series TVSS / V3 SHIELD will fully protect telecommunications equipment
from lightning power surges. This equipment provides non-degrading,
bipolar SAD technology with the lowest possible clamping voltage and
fastest responsible time available in the industry today.
This equipment’s technology provides thermal protection against
prolonged over voltage conditions, and allows actual peak pulse current
to be handled by the suppression module, well in excess of traditional
fused modules. Independent primary SAD suppression and secondary MOV
suppression insures continued protection, and this equipment is provided
with remote failure indication for long distance monitoring.
